Audio Description in Performance

In these classes we offer an in-depth dive into the art of Audio Description, not only as a tangible way to make work that is more accessible to the blind and sight impaired, but also as a way to question the gap between what we perceive and how we understand in a sight-centered world. The layered craft of interpretation and communication, which is revealed through the act of describing, is both creative and political. It should not be an afterthought, and should be as complex and rich as the performance itself.

Individualized Support

For choreographers who want to integrate Audio Description (AD) into their process:

We offer 1 hour zoom sessions, including an ‘AD for Performance 101’ packet and support for questions tailored to each choreographer on how they might thoughtfully describe specific aspects or sections of their work.

We are committed to expanding Audio Description from process to performance in the dance field, with the understanding that people who do not experience dance primarily through sight deserve a layered and rich experience of the art form.

PRICE

We believe that integrating this perspective will make the performance richer and more layered for anyone making or engaging with dance. That is why we offer this service at a pay as you wish sliding scale.

Perception and Perspective

In this 90 minute - 3 hour group workshop we will dive deeper into the philosophical, sociocultural, and creative questions that arise from the deep integration of Audio Description. We will ask what AD can teach us about the space between the ways we perceive, interpret, and understand one another. What potential does AD have for dismantling hierarchies and assumptions? How can AD support us in attuning to our inherent multiplicity and building connection with one another from there?
